8th-grade algebra has pluses and minuses, county shows
A recent lesson in teacher Mike Taliana's algebra class at Oceanside's Lincoln Middle School: Write the equation of the line with y intercept = 3 and perpendicular to y = ½x + 4. Anyone still there? Your average adult may be running scared, but the state Board of Education wants all California middle school students to take algebra and pass a proficiency exam that includes similar questions by the end of eighth grade.

That is not a hard equation to do. I think too many of our kids can not do advanced math and that is a big problem when a lot of the logic that they will need down the road comes from using their brain and exercising it while they are young. The brain is like any muscle of the body. You have to get it in shape if you want to use it later on in life.
