Virtue
Does virtue have a real across the board meaning or is it determined by what the individual deems as virtue or virtuous?
The commonly accepted definitions of virtue (according to the dictionaries) are:
1. moral excellence; goodness; righteousness.
2. conformity of one's life and conduct to moral and ethical principles; uprightness; rectitude.
3. chastity; virginity: to lose one's virtue.
Socrates believed that there was an important correlation between virtue and knowledge, that knowledge is necessary and sufficient for virtuous conduct. He believed that all rational desires are focused on what is good; therefore if one knows what is good, he or she not act contrary.
Also, if one has non-rational desires, but knowledge is sufficient to overcome them, so if one is knowledgeable of goodness, he will not act irrationally.
Basically in order to be virtuous one must know the difference between good and evil. Socrates also professed that no man has the power to have complete knowledge of virtue, and therefore no man can be completely good.
The "across the board" meaning of virtue would be determined by society's accepted definition of good and evil.
I disliked virtue that people need to me in my childhood. Because my parent generation use traditional value or virtue in order to limit my behavior. Maybe, in my childhood I thought that virtue that people obliged to me is not real but their disguise. Ratherly, I thought that obliged virtue was useful to people that have social power in order to control weak people. So, I abhored these virtue.
Sometimes people say that virtue originates from society. I doubt if society is virtuous. I want to concentrate on conscience's voice.
By Demian written by Hermann Hesse, Demian says that we can get wanted things by concentrating on our wish. Namely, we are creator or god in our world as Friedrich Hegel says creator of idea. Then Demian says that there is forbidden or permitted hehavior. I think that evil mind of our society in our world is in our mind or thought. Their greed to get wanted things cause other people to be hurted or killed. They believe that they is virtuous by their religion or belief.
Sometimes I am startled by their evil behavior. And, I get to be deperate to them.
Since I feel disappointed to them, I get to dislike to live in our world.
Whenever this situation happens, I listen to voice of my mind. Then, My mind
give me that I can understand this situation virtuously or correctly. Sometimes,
It is calm knowlege to understand this abhoring situation.
I think the social virtue is out of my world that I recongnize. On the other hand,
that means that reference of my behavior is out of me. I think that many people use outer reference in order to satisfy their greed. I believe that outer reference about virtue is dangerous.
YES, there is an "across the board" meaning of virtue and cannot just be determined what an individual deems as virtuous.
In my opinion, it is that virtue encompassing all that is TRUE and GOOD in excess of the JUST LAWS and MORAL SENSE. First, it must be true. Second it must be good, that which is lawful and just for humanity.
Example is friendship as a virtue. TRUE friendship is good. Friendship is just and lawful and certainly, is a righteous virtue for anyone capable of moral sense.
