Comments: AS a outsider from Singapore, a Chinese (yellow) and a Christian, I thought that the benediction was the highlight of the inauguration ceremony. It reflected and emphasised all the qualities that Barack Obama stood for and the use of rhyme made people take note of the issues but gave it a lighthearted and heartwarming tone instead of a preachy boring prayer.
Rather off topic, but... Quote JoePublic
Of course he was , but come on, that happened 40 years ago, and this preacher is still asking us to " work for the day (Implying that it is still occurring) when black will not be asked to get in back". If we look at the Grammar of that sentence, it is definitely implying that blacks are still forced to sit in the back of the bus. That is dishonest and does not help move a country forward that has spilt its blood to eradicate slavery and discrimination. If he had said,"Thank you God that the Black is not asked to sit in the back" I would have understood that that Prayer and felt the same sentiments. Focusing on past wrongs that have been corrected is a sin and the preacher should know this. |
His prayer was racist. When are the Blacks going to accept the fact that racism is over? They have their president; time to realize this. President Obama's speech was the worst he ever gave; no passion, just a bunch of generalities; possibly because he realizes it will be impossible to keep all the promises he made in the campaign.
I am one who is going to sit back for the next few days or couple weeks and see just what he is going to do and what direction he is going to try and take this country. The prayer is one that makes it seem to be trying to move it in possibly the wrong direction.
Inauguration lows
A couple of notable ones. First, the benediction was done by the Reverend Joseph Lowery, who ended it by saying 'we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right.' Embrace what's right? What era is this guy living in? Secondly, was a Helen Thomas interview where she slipped and said she was a liberal. The sad part was that Helen had more to say. Sadder yet, there is video of this (skip to about 3:20 in).

Civil Rights Icon Rev. Joseph Lowery Delivers Benediction at Obama Inauguration
The Reverend Joseph Lowery gave the benediction at the inauguration. Lowery is a towering figure in the civil rights movement. In 1955, he helped lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Two years later, he and Martin Luther King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1965, Rev. Lowery led the march from Selma to Montgomery. At Tuesday's inauguration he began the benediction with the opening lines of the Negro National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
