I deal with Mexican illegal immigrants all the time at my job. They are grateful for jobs that I wouldn't consider doing unless I was desperate, they live in conditions that are shabby at best, and they are generally polite and decent people, if a little tough to understand for a guy who speaks pidgin Spanish at best. But I feel sorry for them. They send most of their money home to Mexico, they are blatantly disrespected by the community they find themselves in, and they have to band together with their "handlers" For the most basic things. They have to work in the U.S. While worrying about their families thousands of miles away. One of my great pleasures was in helping set up those folks with unlimited international calling plans with cell phones at reasonable prices. They were so grateful that that burden of distance could be shrunk a bit by being able to reach their loved ones.
We need to keep in mind that the citizens of Mexico are not the stereotype. There are beautiful human beings there. The shame of it is that the drugs and the violence from the rampant gang activity is ruining a country with a rich history and a great deal to offer its neighbors. We in the U.S. Spend so much on police actions and welfare in the Middle East and other hot spots, yet our response to our neighbors is to argue about who would build the highest wall. That is truly a tragedy of national proportions.
