Do Poltergeistes Exist?

My wife and I had a strange experience last week in our house.
We heard a crashing sound upstairs one evening.
There was no window open in the bathroom, but two candles had flown off the shelf and crashed into the bath. There was no-one upstairs and we have no rational explanation.

Are we victims of a Poltergeist?

That must have ben scary. I usually go for another explanation though. Sometimes there is an internal daft like if you were baking and the heat went upstairs. Then again how will you know or sure, only if it happens repeatedly?

I think you should place the candles back where they were and use a feather or some other light object to test to see if there my be a graft in that area that might have knocked them down. If there is no draft then maybe there is something else there. But then again it may have been a isolated incident. Or a freak draft that just happened.

Good thinking! Might want to do that in other parts of the house too or even set up some video cams. THese days they're real cheap. Get the wireless ones and hook it up to your puter.

Thank you for the advice.
I am aware of other strange activity in the house too;
There is a distinct smell of pipe smoke in one of the rooms sometimes, even though no-one smokes in the house.
We also had a game of monopoly that was turning into a strange series of coincidence and had a seance like atmosphere, that was last boxing day.
We don't feel any threat, we are slowly getting used to the house spirits.

Sounds like you have a friendly spirit in the house with you. Maybe the spirit likes to play monopoly. Let it play in room to its hearts content.

I really doubt any draft is going to only move a candle. That is one heck of a draft!

But to check for drafts use incense sticks light it will all door and windows closed. Hold it near where you suspect a draft might occur or exist and watch the smoke. Old trick in looking for air leaks in a house for vapor barriers missing or punctured.

The game might be a clue as to last activities? or children perhaps.

I agree with Krakyn, common sense dictates that a strong gust of wind would be required to topple a candle. The scent of 'pipe smoke' is very interesting.
Before you can accept the fact that you may be experiencing something supernatural you have to eliminate all other possibilities. The strange smell could be from something left over from the previous owners of the house.

Also, it's not a poltergeist. They can be described as the malicious spirit of a child, like an invisible 2 year old running about delighting in making a mess. You'd know it if one were about.

Ghosts only know the 'what once was' of your house, but it seems that when they develop a conscious understanding of things being different they begin to react to the physical world.

Have you changed anything in your home recently? Moved something that had never been moved before?
