Novice Html User Looking For Guidance.

I just got into web design this year because of school. I find it a real interesting class. I've got the basics of HTML down. But I want to learn and become a professional web designer. My question for you is, where should I go from here? I know there are many other codes besides HTML. What should I do to make my HTML better? What other coding should I work on too? Any guidance would be appreciated.

You could get into PHP, ASP or Java, however keep in mind that a large part of web design is the ability to work with graphics, how are you in this area?

Now that you mention it. Not very good. So I guess I'm looking for the web programming field? Is that the field that does more with the coding and programming?

Yes, and they generally make more money too than a front end web designer, so you are better off diving into it unless you plan to outsource your graphic work or partner with someone.

Plus being a coder puts you in charge its the guts that runs everything. The html and graphics is like the paint job on a car but the code is the engine that makes it work.

In all cases you need to know HTML really well so get tops on that and then you can head to the ones I mentioned already. There are plenty of free online tutorials especially for PHP.

PHP would probably be the easiest to get into, even the more advanced stuff isn't all that complex. It's also the most widely used on the web.

If you want something different, try a framework called "Ruby on Rails" - it produces some pretty amazing stuff (like Twitter!). From what I've observed about the language, you'll either love working with Ruby, or hate it.
