Chkdsk Stalls
What causes chkdsk to stall while running on Windows startup?
Depends on the problems encountered. Its hard to stay but I have seen chkdsk take a day or two to resolve. I know it looks like its stuck on a number, but it isnt, just be patient and use another computer while chkdsk does its thing.
I have one computer that I try to run this on but it never completes and after half a day I have to restart. I do find that using the restore option from the Windows CD gives a better percentage for chdsk rather than running it under install Windows.
Regenerating harddrives is always a problem. I've found that HD regenerator is one of the best solutions for solving the problem of many bad sectors. I've been on some systems where the drive had some bad sectors and then when I would do a chkdsk /r it would just freeze and refuse to move. What you do is purchase a copy of HD regerator and ceate a boot disk or boot flash drive using the software. Don't use the scan under Windows option because you'll reach no where real fast. Anyway, create the boot disk and run it and you will see the program scanning your system real fast fixing the drive. Now if there are some sectors that are really bad then you will see the screen telling you to reboot, don't worry about that you may have to rebbot to HD regenerator a number of times until it scans 100% of your system. After 100% you can then tak out the boot disk and let your system start up normally. If you want to be sure let chkdsk do a full scan of your system again and see if it goes all the way through.
