Trini Valentine's Day
Do you celebrate Valentine's Day in Trinidad or Tobago? What do you normally do?
I remember as a little girl growing up, people in Trinidad never batted an eyelash on Valentine's day. But nowadays, if you don't give your loved one anything or forget to acknowledge her on Valentine's day, expect the cold shoulder.
My hubby and I love to eat so normally, we would choose a restaurant we never dined in and go there. But these days, we may go to the mall and have a quick bite since food is sooooo expensive!
Trinis love to celebrate Valentine's day. I have seen men search in flower shops for the cheapest arrangement and the more romantic guys look for roses. But I have noticed that the restaurants do very well not only on Valentine's day but for the whole week! I remember one year, my hubby and I chose to celebrate Valentine's day on 15 February since we wanted to avoid the crowded restaurants. But much to our amazement, the restaurant (I think it was El Colesseo) was well patronized. I asked the Head waiter why it was so busy that night. He said that for the whole week, people celebrate Valentine's day and not just on 14th February! How funny! Looks like everyone had the same idea as ours. To avoid the crowd by celebrating Valentine's on a different day!
What a pity people don't know that business men came up with the Valentine's day concept as an excellent way to boost sales. And do you know what? It really works!
I do with my wife. I experienced Valentine's Day in the US in both kindergarten and high school and it was so much fun to give and receive cards. If I were not married I doubt I would have kept up anything associated with it here.

Comments: Unfortunately Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday this year and just before Carnival so my boyfriend and I have decided to just stay home and watch a movie together.
Last Friday I was surprised to see how many Valentine's baskets, bears and decorations were being sold. As a teenager Valentine's Day was hardly noticed with maybe just a few floral shops having something small about it. Of course now marketing has made it another profitable event and so it has become bigger in Trinidad.
That's because businessmen have seen where they can make money off of American traditions. Many Trinis have cable now and they see all the ads for things like Valentine's so naturally if they go shopping its still in their mind.
Happy Valentine's day to all the Trinis out there. We will be going out to dinner and maybe some dancing tonight.
