Battle brews over neighborhood bars
Bob McCarthy sees his bar as a splash of Manhattan in Salt Lake City, a place where Capitol Hill and Avenues sophisticates could soon sip wine and martinis after work. Some of his neighbors see the bar as a danger to the children who live nearby. Ref. Source 8
Maybe I am missing something here. This bar is already there but only serves beer, they are looking to serve wine and mixed drinks I would guess. I would suspect that the real issue is that the people were hoping to get rid of the watering hole period. So by getting the hard liqueur banned they might drive the place out of business.
I can understand not wanting drunk people driving or even staggering about on the walkways. If it is already there though I do not see the big deal in serving mixed drinks. If you are a heavy drinker you just drink more beer. The end result is the same.
