Comments: Hello, My daughter was just prescribed 18mg of concerta. I am really concerned about how she will react to it. How long before I notice a change in behavior? I was thinking of taking a few days off from work so I can monitor her...any suggestions? I know she needs this but I'm really scared.
Bridgette, I think she will be fine. The change of behavior should be noticed quickly, all depends on the metabolism of the child. Just ensure she eats something BEFORE giving her the pill and most of all, never ever cut the pill in half.

Comments: Thank you. I was told 48 to 72 hours before a change. Is that accurate when you say quickly? Do you suggest I alert the school so they will be aware there could be a change of behavior?
Yes, the time is accurate since the body has to get used to the drug. Another recommendation I can give you is to read as much as you can about the side effects of Concerta so you're fully aware of any changes and if for some reason you want to stop, do not stop suddenly but let your doctor know about it FIRST. Withdrawals symptoms are not easy to handle (I know because of my son), just like any other drug must be treated seriously. Concerta worked for my son wonderfully for a while and suddenly stopped. It seems like these drugs (Ritalin, Concerta, etc) have a lifespan for some reason (the body reaches a point of immunity to it) so try to look for the signs so you can know whether the drug is working, not working, or need to be changed.
Yes, definetely you should alert the school, teachers, etc.
Please join our community and keep us update how she is doing.
So it does retain the resistance to the drug once used. I know there are many nastey side effects and can appreciate you decision as hard as that can be.
Genetic modification might be the finial answer once it develops far enough just like many other issues such as cancer.
