It seems they will be willing to test my sample and here is what they said to get the samples.

any time you find a bloom, send a sample (just scoop out some into a small bottle (even an empty PET bottle that had water in eg like the ones you can get from a vending machine - I often resort to these f I see something interesting and don't have a sampling bottle with me, they are widely available and once emptied and rinsed with the lake water, are ideal for this), keep it cool and leave a little air at the top to stop the material from degrading, and drop it by; we'll ID it; if it looks like a potentially toxic species I'll see if we can run some screening tests.

So I will see what I can find this trip up we might get some early flowers but most likely 4 weeks before anything actually blooms.

Krakyn, you are a brave soul! But it sounds like an important project, and I hope that you can do good, make change, and find satisfaction in a job well done. Good for you for taking this on. I'm looking forward to your progress reports.

*wiggling in red tape* I am now dealing with the ministry of environment as it looks like they have done some testing. Be interesting to see what comes of that. Thanks for the words of encouragement!

Thank you for contacting the Lake Partner Program.

To give you a bit of background on the Ministry of the Environment's Lake Partner Program, we are a volunteer-based program that provides citizens with the means necessary to monitor their Ontario lake's water quality during the ice-free season. I have checked our database and it turns out that Lake Wilcox does not currently have a Lake Partner monitoring its water quality. Therefore, my first suggestion is to sign up to be a Lake Partner, or you can always find someone else who would be interested. This would allow you to begin tracking total phosphorus and water clarity in your lake. You can sign up by emailing me directly or on our website at www.ontario.ca/lakepartner or by phone at 1-800-470-8322.

Secondly, your best bet to find out if there have been any studies done on Lake Wilcox in Grey County is to contact your local Ministry of the Environment Office which is likely Owen Sound. Also, I have passed your email along to someone in our Southwestern Regional Office who will be able to answer your question about other studies done on Wilcox Lake. He should get back to you soon.

Hope this helps,

SO off to the next office I go.

Sounds like I need some spring weather.

Seem the big chunks of algae often seen floating about is called a bloom. So I need to can some when I find them. Flesherton pond floats in them often and they stink. Apparently they should smell nice if all is healthy!

No I have not given up on this yet just chasing some leads down. I have became the lakes partner which mean I will be taking monthly water sample for clarity and stuff. having a boat is a real nice thing for this it seems they want the deepest part of the lake.

Mean time I contacted the local environment office who have not done any water or soil testing at this site. here is their reply to me.

Regarding your phone message, the sign you referred to advising against swimming at Wilcox Lake, would have been posted by the Grey Bruce Health Unit.    Every summer, the H.U. Usually runs a water sampling program of area lakes and beaches, testing for bacteria levels.    This program does not involve the MOE.    For more details, you can call the Health Unit at 519 376 9420 and ask to speak to the health inspector for that area.
You also expressed concerns regarding the Artemesia landfill, specifically regarding its effects on the headwaters of Wilcox lake.    Landfills are generally established with a buffer zone around the actual fill area, known as an attenuation zone.  The purpose of this zone is to allow for attenuation and absorption/dilution of any contaminants generated by the landfill.
In addition, the licence under which the landfill is operated, termed a Certificate of Approval, contains conditions for establishing and sampling a groundwater and surface water monitoring program around the landfill.  Results of the monitoring programs are provided in annual reports to the MOE.    The most recent report for 2007 concluded that there were no significant impacts on local groundwater and surface water.      Copies of the reports are typically available for public viewing at the Municipal office or library.

This site was in place back in the 50's I just bet there is a burn....a big pile of sand.

I have contacted the Health unit there they are going to dig up what they have and fax it to me as well as find out where that 2007 files is. I will be contacting the Municipal office to see if I can get that report faxed over.

On aside not you would think this person really just does not care from the tone of that note to me. This is where I full expect to find out if any cover up has been done.

This town of Flesherton is where I when to school 4000 people. Pockets get lined daily for permits.

On a different note I have the local water specialist from the ministry working on this with me. He has a file on this lake and is reviewing it. So I am just trying to dig up more so fill in blanks that might be. I am glad I still have local resources though which can process water samples or algae samples I take on top of this venue.

I feel I will get answers just will take a bit of time.

I hope it all goes well for you. I think getting some samples coming from that land fill might be something to do.

Once I get all the formal information I will get into what how and where to best get samples. Now I am chasing the Conservation Authority seems they have done testing there. If so plant and small insects likely have been tested. Love to see that one.
