Should I Care About You?
Is there any real reason in a philosophical sense that should care about you?
Well depending on your philosophical beliefs then yes and no. There is a philosophical that reality can be centered around one being, and once that being ceases to exist reality ceases to exist along with it. Therefore, if you were to believe this to be true, I may be that person and if I were to no longer exist then you would no longer exist.
There there is also karma, something bad could happen to you if you decide you don't care about anyone else. It's the way of the world.
I think that depends on who you are and what you mean to me. I think that if you know me then in a way you probably care about me in some way. If you do not know me then you probably do not care about me.
The only way you can not care about someone that you have met is the persons who have done some sort of violence against you. Even some victims still care about those who have done violence against them.
If you do not care about anyone no matter what, are you truly alive?
People are inherently good. Or at least they want to be. If we actively care about others we feel better about ourselves. If we are only focused on ourselves at the expense of others we run the risk of becoming bitter and jaded. Life then loses much of what makes it worthwhile.
Should you care about me, personally? Probably not, unless our spheres of influence are relatively close. It may make you feel better to care about me and I may benefit from this but it is not necessary for society that you care about me. Should you care about humankind? Probably, because without this fundamental ethic, there would be no laws that would protect us from...well...basically ourselves. The respect for others is a dominating ethic that allows society to govern itself. Without it, there would be anarchy and hedonism.
Kill a fish, cow or pig and see what happens in todays world. You arent going to get hit with much in the way of punishment. Kill a person, get caught and you will be spending much quality time away from the others in the sandbox. That is because we care about each other more than animals.
The answer depends on what kind of selfish you want to be.
You could care about every little human being because you care about the moral fiber holding society together, but that would most likely be the result of your own desire to continue living in that society.
You could care about what happens to others because you desire them to do the same for you, but that in itself is inherently selfish considering you would only care about the plight of others because you, yourself would like to be cared for.
You could also not care at all about anyone but yourself. The selfishness of which need not be explained.
Without the presence of some outside force, you can not truly and definitively reach that answer yourself. The answer will always originate out of your, and society's, goals.
