Do You Think The U. S. A. Is...

Approaching Spiritual Death
Martin Luther King, Jr. foresaw Americas spiritual death

Dr. King was right about a lot of things, including his prophecy that America was losing its soul. Violence of all types in epidemic, especially the violence of poverty. Gun violence, from homicide to suicide, is all too common.

The claim cannot be made that America is losing its soul when we are ever increasingly allowing morals and values to be legislated. Marriage laws are being proposed by the President that back traditional christian values. The country continues to speak out on the side of christian values because christians have chosen to speak up for what they want. Its neither good or bad but simply true. That being said, I cant say that I think that the country is losing its soul because of that purpose. We have more rights than ever now, when Dr. King said that, black americans still didn't have many rights. Surely they have made great strides in that area allowing more equality in our country. How does that constitute the losing of a countries soul?

That was one of the most hate-filled, inflammatory, editorials I've read in a long time.

QUOTE
America may have sealed its doom when the various militarist administrations of the last 25 years started incurring the massive national debt, currently, under the Cheney/Bush war-mongering regime, reaching a crippling $7 trillion - initially for war-readiness and then for the mass slaughter of innocent, unarmed civilian women and children in Iraq and Afghanistan

I am not going to comment in the Editorial itself because it is clear to me that the writer is using Mr. King's words to his own advantage and interpretation but one thing I want to point out which I agree very much with what Mr. King said:

QUOTE
A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.

I think is very true. When a nation in general (I am NOT talking about the US specifically) forgets its people and focus too much in conflicts and wars is approaching spiritual death and becoming "pass" feeling.

I disagree with Konquerorz' assertion:

QUOTE

The fact that there is an attempt to define such issues through legislation is the greatest single evidence of moral decline. Before now, there was never the slightest thought that people would attempt to redefine marriage, to make homosexuality "normal", to deny handicapped people food and water (to deny even an attempt to offer them food and water), to make pornography readily available to children, or to encourage abortion! 100 years ago, not even the most perverse elements of society would have dreamed that any of these things would be allowed. Society was about upholding the moral standards. Now it is about tearing them down.

But what, in all of history, especially within the US Constitution, give government the right, let alone the responsibility to establish programs of "social uplift"? The whole idea that the government is responsible for providing any type of social program is directly tied to the precepts of socialism and communism. Government's place is to establish order and to defend society from enemies, foreign and domestic. This allows the citizens to provide their own social programs. By interfering with government mandated social programs, societal immorality is encouraged, not discouraged.

This is so true. If the morals were so high, there should not be a need for legislation about simple matters that now seem controversial.
I do not know if I can say that the US is losing its soul but there is a moral decline.

Offtopic but,

Then with this thread of thinking, the present and past US governments are nothing but a product of Communism, including Pres. Bush's cabinet: The Department of Labor, The Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Energy, Department of Education, etc, etc etc. Then Pres. Bush should have only the Department of Home land security and if you think they are paying you too little on your salary, or you think you need training in a certain area or need social assistance, then nobody can complain because after all the role of the government is just to "defend society from enemies, foreign and domestic."

While LDS may be true in general, I do not think this can be argued as the writer of the article intended to suggest that this is what we do in the US. We spend a ton of money on Social programs in this country. It doesn't all come from the Federal government. Much of it comes from local and state funds, which is where it should come from. There are distinct purposes for each form of government in this country. That is why we have state and local governing agencies.

If any country doesn't spend a significant amount of money on defense then they need to get help from a country that does spend it or else they become a victim of a country that does spend it through invasion.

I think that the USA is not living up to the ideals it was created upon, but that it never did. There are always people with an immoral soul, and there were always those in the United States. The United States did not start at the peak of morality and it is not there now, but still in my opinion, it is on its way.
