I don't think people go their to check out the waitresses. |
Name: Christian
Comments: Oh well I don't know about you but I wouldn't go their to check out the women, I'd go their for the food... And like what has been said before, you see more skin at the beach or swimming pool. It's not the "wrong" place to be.
I would like to try a more neutral approach if I can. I probably would not be able to go there very often if ever for the fact that I would be distracted and turned on by the waitresses, but I also don't think we should automatically judge that someone else, (member or otherwise), couldn't go to Hooters just for the food. Each of us have strengths and weaknesses and for some people distractions like waitresses are not a problem.
Good points Nighthawk and Thomaslee.
Ours is a gospel of Feelings and Emotions. We are not (just) judged by our outward actions, but mostly by how we feel. Our ideal is to conquer an Earth-claden mind, to get the diamond inside that will lift us up. Everybody is different. Like you said, yes, maybe they have their "boobs practically hanging in your faces". And we shouldn't condone it, or suggest any of the daughters of Zion dress that way. Do these women know any better? Should we condemn them for their lack of knowledge? I don't think so. I think we should feel sorry for their choice, and have charity. But back to the topic of eating at hooters. I think if someone has trouble controlling their thoughts (and eyes for that matter...), they probably shouldn't. It is wrong to lust after women, and seek after the pleasures you can derive from the beautiful bodies given to them. The more easily one is distracted by a women being scantily clad, the more important it becomes to avoid such situations until one is able to conquer these lusts. If one does not struggle with it, then it becomes a whole different matter.
Yes the beach is totally worse. I haven't ever been to a hooters, but from pictures I've seen from friends who were there, I have to say most "temple-worthy" lds girls wear swimsuits that show more skin. Why do we excuse nakedness because of the activity we're involved in (surfers and divers wear wet suits that would allow you to keep wearing your garments for example, so it's not impossible) for ourselves, but then condemn the waitress that may be wearing a skirt that is too short, or is working at hooters?
I think the question shouldn't be so much about whether or not it is ok for a worthy church member too eat in such an environment, as that is a very personal matter, but rather if we think that it is wise to spend GODs money in a way that supports and encourages to act women in such a seductive way. The scriptures tell us we don't own anything, hence all of our money is GODs money, and we should spend it in a way that we feel would be justified before Him. Therefore I think we need to ask ourselves whether we would feel comfortable telling GOD we spent His money on whatever we consider purchasing or not. Of course you only buy a hamburger, which isn't evil, but the whole business plan of Hooters revolves around "sex sells." By giving money to that cause we inadvertently support it, at least financially. By free market principles, that can be interpreted as encouraging it. What do you guys think?
OldSouth, yes I think spending money in there is somewhat supporting immodesty and the whole "sex sells" concept. However, I don't agree that "most "temple-worthy" lds girls wear swimsuits that show more skin" as you said. How do you know "most" of them do so?
ChicaSUD, allow me to correct myself: most temple worthy lds-girls I KNOW show more skin. In fact, most bathing suits I see for sale here in UT are basically a bikini, with fabric added to the midsection to cover a womans torso. Hence, her legs are completely exposed as if wearing a bikin, she will have a very deep cleavage covering little more than a bikini would. I don't feel this is covering more than what hooters girls expose. In fact I have to say, I personally don't feel it is appropriate. But that is a different story all over.
You're right, my comment on the "most girls" was inappropriate, as it was based solely on my observances and those of my friends, greatly limited compared to the millions of members out there. Therefore I cannot correctly claim to know that most girls do wear swimsuits. It is my belief though that they do. Because wherever I have been, girls were encouraged to wear swimsuits while bathing, as it was seen as better than the bikini, and actually modest. I disagree about the modesty of the swimsuit personally, but as I said, that is not the topic. I do stand up to say that it is my feeling that most women in the church will be wearing a swimsuit, and I'm certain a vast majority is not going to wear anything that is compatible with the garment while bathing. But as pointed out by you, these are mere opinions. Opinions I have developed from conclusions derived from observance, as well as discussion with fellow church members. Thank you for pointing out my mistake so I could have a chance of correcting my prideful comment
Brothers and sisters I think as members of the Church we tend to judge one another very often. These young ladies (waitresses) aren't members of the Church, they don't have the knowledge that we do, we should love them and care for them regardless of how they dress. Having said that I don't think members should go to eat there as I think we should remember the fact that we should avoid all appearance of evil, specially our dear priesthood holders.
