Before a committee the manager of HDC claimed that there were over 200,000 applicants and only about 9,000 units were planned for distribution by 2015. This means that around 5% of applicants will be met. Ms. John also mentioned that most people do not want an apartment and prefer a house but most of the government lands have been set aside for farming.
The Housing Development Corporation plans to construct more than 9,000 housing units by 2015 and it makes me wonder: Why? Why build more houses if they are not allocating the ones they already have? They also stated that in those 9,000 units is accounted those under construction and under repair in the areas of: La Fortune, Victoria Keys, Vieux Fort, Chaconia Crescent, Mora Heights, Gomez Trace, Fairfield, Cypress Gardens, and Exchange "among others. Also, apparently the issue with Chaconia Crescent was that they gave the contract to TWO companies in "Error" And led to the suspension of the project and they were garbage chutes in front the houses which did not add to the aesthetics of the development.
Sounds like politics to me, mind you if they can do it then all the power to them, but after many years of people waiting decades for homes why do they think they can accomplish this in a year's time. The HDC or rather the government (Past ones too) as a whole has been promising to deliver thousands of places for years but when you watch the hand out programme you only see a couple of hundred get places.
HDC and the Trinidad and Tobago Finance company opened a new mortgage, 5% for houses costing almost 2 million dollars, they stated they want to focus on the middle income earners who cannot afford a 2 million dollar house cash.
The HDC should be more clear on what it is doing with their properties so people in anticipation can be in the know. For instance rather than waste your website telling us how much you are going to do in the future you could put status updates like property x in y location will be ready on z date. If there is a delay then WHY there is a delay should also be published. Doing this will also help HDC direct people for their status.
According to TV6 the HDC handed out 32 keys to new HDC home owners. The government hopes to hand out 1000 keys to new homes before Christmas. Minister Moonilal said there was a reduction in crime in HDC estates due to strategic planning on the part of the HDC that involved the placement of police and defense force personnel.
This is how houses are supposed to be allocated:
