Which Son To Choose?
Picture this... You are a Jew, and a parent to three young boys. Your sons ages are 7, 5, and 2. You live with them in Germany during the World War II period. A certain day the German officers terrorize your village and take your sons. They put your sons on a truck and make ready to leave for what destination you do not know. You plead with a German officer to let your children go. He asks for you to point out your three sons from the truck and you do so hoping that he will let them go, but he instead says for you to choose ONE and you can have him stay with you but the other two will remain. What choice do you make?
That is a hard one. I am betting that unconsciously I would chose the youngest as the others would have a better chance to live then this one.
Think of my own boys I would be hard pressed to chose. My youngest and I get along best but I have so much respect for the oldest as he is turning in to a fine young man. My oldest would not do as well left on his own then my youngest. My younger is more dominate and stronger willed in survival. How could you chose...but you know you would as one is better then none.
I'm glad to see a reply, I was amazed that such a thought provoking topic could be ignored for so long. You make a good point about choosing the youngest because the older ones have a better chance of fending for themselves. The other way to look at it is the older ones will actually remember the experience where the 2 year old might most likely not. They will remember you choosing their younger brother over them, it is heart wrenching - I hope to NEVER be in such a position.
