Record number of Utah police disciplined
ST. GEORGE - A record number of cops lost their badges in Utah last year, perhaps as a result of tougher guidelines being pushed by the agency that certifies and disciplines police officers. The Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Council conducted 124 investigations into allegations of officer misconduct in 2008, agency officials said Monday. Of those, 23 police officers had their certifications revoked, another 30 were suspended, and the rest had some level of discipline on their record. Ref. Source 9
r-pe crisis team says crimes under reported in Utah, victims under served
Last year, the team helped 316 r-pe victims and their family members, though the majority of the rapes were never part of a criminal report. Still, with 107 r-pe cases documented in the Bureau of Criminal Identification's latest Crime in Utah Report, Utah County ranked second in the state for reported rapes last year. The idea that hundreds more r-pe survivors need help but don't come forward is a chilling motivation for the r-pe Crisis Team. They believe they can make a difference, one trauma at a time. Ref. 48 Utah homicides in 2010, including 11 children
But when the severity of some of the crimes is considered, and when other deaths that did not "count" as homicides are taken into consideration - such as officer-involved shootings - some would argue that 2010 was still a disturbingly violent year in Utah. Ref. Source 6
