hen, I come back, and my doctor wanted to talk to me about the fact that I have extremely high cholesterol.

Maybe you should consider a vegetarian diet or reduce your amount of animal products. The body itself produce cholesterol, so we don't really need to eat any kind of animal products. You should be very careful about it.
Regards to MartinEden, you are doing a great job defending what you think is right, and that's why I gave you a charisma point wink.gif

Introduction Nighthawk

I don't believe in vegetarian diets. However, I am changing my diet already, and am looking at herbs and other supplements so that I can avoid medication.

My problem is that I find I feel much better if I have plenty of protein in my diet. Now that I eat very little cheese or other dairy products, and am cutting almost all eggs and red meat out, I don't really know how to get the protein. I am using Slim-Fast at the moment, but that leaves me always hungry.

Nighthawk, you might try one of the good protein powders available. There are a lot of ways to use it -- not just whipping up shakes. I've cooked Alfredo sauce with it for pasta, and even baked it into a cheese cake smile.gif It adds protein without adding a lot of calories or fat. Just a suggestion smile.gif

I'm a vegetarian and many people think that only animal products are source of protein, but there are many sources of protein... here are some of them that you can incorporate to your diet:

* Cereals and grains - wheat, rye, corn
* Leafy green vegetables, including spinach
* Legumes - beans, lentils, peas, peanuts
* Nuts - almonds, walnuts, cashews...
* Seeds - sesame, sunflower...
* Soy products - tofu, tempeh, soy milk...
* Vegetables - Brussel sprouts, potatoes, etc.

See? plenty protein sources wink.gif you just need around 50gms of protein per day. We consume much more protein than is needed.

Introduction Nighthawk

Thanks for the recommendations. But I still find that I need much more than 50gm of protein. From my studies, I probably need about 120 (for my current weight), and to cut out the simple carbs.

But then, I have been eating far less simple carbs then I used to. I generally eat a lot of whole grain things, such as whole grain breads, pasta, and rice. I'll admit to having quite a bit of meat with those things though.

Anyway, I am learning, and making some changes already. But it really is more expensive to eat well than to eat poorly.

That is why there is such a high rate of obesity among the poor.

Of course, if you reduce the amount of meat you eat and increase fruits and vegetables, the increase shouldn't be much. Meat, pound per pound, is much more expensive than fruits or vegetables.

I am not a vegetarian, but recently began changing my diet habits as well. I eat far more fruits and veggies than I used to and because I am also eating less meat and junk food, my groceries really aren't more expensive. The vast majority of my lunches are now 100% veggie. My breakfasts are almost 100% fresh fruit. I have much more energy and I am also losing weight.

Wel, well, well, Nighthawk! Glad to hear it. I have been wondering why you weren't already a full mod. I got the sense you didn't feel like you were ready for it, but I think you are a gread moderator.
