I don't think that any bailout will affect us at all. Bailout funds will only go to keep the UAW mandated programs going.

It will definitely be a while before new car demand will go up. So there won't be a need for a lot of new OEM auto parts (Original Equipment Manufacturer, in other words, new car parts).

On February 13, after getting to work, I immediately went out to my major assembly line, to check on how things were going. While out there (less than 5 minutes), my supervisor came up to me and asked me to come with him. Now, instead of going to his office, he led me into the main office area. At first I thought maybe we were going to talk to the engineering manager about something, especially as we turned that direction.

Suddenly, it hit me. We were also headed towards the HR manager's office. I knew exactly what was coming before we entered the office.

I was laid off. My position was eliminated.

My supervisor escorted me to my desk, where I gathered everything up and then he escorted me out of the building.

Now, almost two months later, I have only had one phone interview. I have applied for dozens of jobs, but haven't had any other responses.

Yesterday my wife made arrangements with someone in Utah for us to rent their house in Hooper. We are getting ready to move on April 25th. We have to just let our house go - again. No more home purchases for us, at least for quite some time.

We have to find homes for two cats and all three dogs.

Anyway, just wanted to update my friends here.

Nighthawk, this is what I feared. When the recession started hitting your industry, I thought immediately about you and your job hence one of my questions within this thread. I am so sorry to hear this. Is your daughter and son still in Utah? Are they close by where you will move? I remember you wanted to move there for a while, what about the two little girls you wanted to adopt? Hope everything works out for you.

Our middle daughter lives near the capitol in Salt Lake City. The house we will be renting is about 40 minutes away. Our oldest and middle sons both live about 30 minutes further away, but they are both looking for other quarters.

We are taking the girls with us, with their mother's full approval. She should get out of prison in August and wants to move out to Utah, to get away from her old lifestyle. We don't really expect to ever be able to adopt the girls.

It is nice you are able to take the two girls with you. Having them in a steady loving home is helping them become nice members of society. It sucks that you can not adopt them and call them you own. I do hope that when their mother gets out of prison and sees how happy they are with you she changes her mind and allows you to keep them.

Nighthawk, I am saddened (but not surprised, based on the news) by your layoff. What other types of industries can use your particular engineering skills? We're praying for you and your family.
