EverBank Laying Off 302 In Response To Loan Declines

EverBank is laying off 302 employees in Jacksonville, the company confirmed Wednesday.Michael Cosgrove, vice president of corporate communications, said 194 positions in mortgage servicing have been eliminated because of the bank?s recent agreement to sell a piece of its mortgage-servicing business to Green Tree Servicing.Those employees were informed last week, he said, and Feb. 28 will be their last day.

More parking should be available in downtown Jacksonville by summer.Ground was broken Tuesday for a $10 million parking garage that will stand six stories high at 37 Hogan St. The structure will be owned mostly by SunTrust Tower. It?s the first significant parking addition in downtown in over a half a decade.Haskell construction contracting of Jacksonville was granted a permit from the city for building the foundation. Haskell Vice President of Organizational Development David Balz said the full building permit is expected to be granted in January.

Seasonal employment increased in 2013, as 18 percent of employers surveyed planned to add more jobs than last year. In 2012, retailers hired 720,000 seasonal workers, according to the National Retail Federation.That?s almost three times the number of workers hired during the 2008 low point of 263,800. But not every worker will be found on the floor of a traditional store; order taking and fulfillment are as important to online merchants as cashiers are to brick and mortar stores.

Window shopping is taking on a new meaning for many Americans.The latest sales data from the holiday season shows that U.S. shoppers increasingly prefer to research clothes, TVs and shoes online, or "virtual window shop," before heading to stores.ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 stores in the U.S., said on Tuesday that sales for in November and December rose 2.7 percent to $265.9 billion. That was better than the 2.4 percent growth the data tracker expected for the season.

But company officials say there were advisories of the pending rate hike sent to customers before it went into effect.The service-rate increases in Jacksonville range from .76 percent to 1.47 percent, depending on where the customer is located and what services they have.

The upshot of a newly released $600,000 strategic plan for the Jacksonville Port Authority should sound familiar by now: Deepening the shipping channel to 47 feet is a critical goal for officials hoping to keep the port a competitive player.While the fate of that expensive project is now in the hands of Congress, JaxPort CEO Brian Taylor said his team has made progress on other aspects of the state-funded strategic plan.?You need to have a road map,? he said. ?And we are actually taking action on that plan.?
