Northeast Florida employers are cutting fewer jobs

The threat of layoffs is casting a shorter shadow over Northeast Florida workers.
Over the past two years, Northeast Florida residents have made fewer initial claims for unemployment benefits.
University of North Florida economist Paul Mason calls it a ?bumpy monthly trend that has been mostly downward? since the worst of the recession. He said the decline is a good sign.
The initial claims are the first time someone seeks unemployment benefits after losing a job.

Working on the First Coast: Nothing better than farm fresh

Marian Evans? father first started selling produce at Jacksonville Farmers Market back in 1958. He?d drive up from Ocala to sell the peanuts, butterbeans, peas, cantaloupes and watermelons that grew down there.
Now Evans makes that drive, still selling produce her brothers grow on the family farm. Midday Tuesday, she sat and shelled white acre peas and talked about the farm and the stand.

Home prices jump $15,000

The median sales price for a home in the Jacksonville area jumped more than $15,000 last month, according the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors? June report.
The median price was $149,000 in June, compared to $133,500 in May and $135,364 in June 2011.
The number of closed sales dropped a bit to 1,565 in June from 1,580 in May and 1,622 in June 2011.
But most of the numbers were good news for sellers.
The average sales price also rose to $200,112 in June, from $183,387 in May.

Jacksonville-based Web.com reports profits up for second quarter

Jacksonville-based Web.com reported the second-quarter earnings this week which shows the Internet design, development and marketing firm on solid financial footing.
Total revenue for the company on Jacksonville?s Southside more than doubled for the same time period a year ago. According to a news release from Web.com, the company?s revenue stood at $98.9 million for the second quarter that ended June 30. That?s up from $42.2 million for the second quarter in 2011.

Fashion retailer H&M to open Sept. 6 in The Avenues

H&M will open next month in The Avenues.
The Swedish fashion retailing giant announced in February that it was coming to Jacksonville, and renovation started in May. But exact opening date had not been set.
Now, it?s official: The world?s second-largest fashion retailer will open Sept. 6. It?ll be the seventh H&M in Florida, but the first between Atlanta and Central Florida.
Known for trendy, inexpensive fashion, the store will feature men?s, women?s and children?s clothing.

They had no way to communicate with air traffic controllers or detect other planes around them in the New York City area?s crowded airspace.
