Case Cantu Sandra

I hope they find out who did this to this little girl. There is no reason why she had to die.

They found the murderer and it WILL surprise you. First of all, because it is a woman (which is unusual in crimes of this nature) but she is also a Sunday School teacher. How little Sandra died has not been revealed as yet since autopsy results still pending. What was the motive of the murder has not been established yet, sounds to me that some sort of sexual crime as it is usually the reason for kidnapping and murder of children.

QUOTE
Police in Tracy, Calif., say they are baffled over what drove a Sunday school teacher to kidnap and kill an 8-year-old girl, whose body was found stuffed in the woman's suitcase at the bottom of a pond.

Melissa Huckaby, 28, is in jail after being charged with the murder of the girl. Sandra Cantu. Huckaby, who lives in the same mobile home park as Sandra's family, was one of the last people to see the girl alive - when she came to play with Huckaby's 5-year-old daughter.

The girls were close friends, Tracy Police Sgt. Tony Sheneman told reporters Saturday after Huckaby's arrest.

"I couldn't even begin to theorize what her motive is," Sheneman said.

He said there are no other suspects in Sandra's murder and no other arrests will be made. He said detectives know where the crime took place, but he wouldn't say where.

Huckaby was taken into custody at 11:15 p.m. Friday night after a police interview, Sheneman said. She is being held without bail in the San Joaquin County Jail on charges she kidnapped and killed the second-grader. An arraignment is set for Tuesday.

She is on suicide watch in an observation cell, police said, and she is refusing to see visitors.

"(Huckaby) gave enough information to us during the course of the interview that probable cause was there to arrest her," Sheneman said, declining to say whether Huckaby confessed to the crime.

During the interrogation, Huckaby initially appeared "calm, cool, collected" but then became agitated and emotional, according to the sergeant. Later, she switched back to being calm, he said.

Police have not said how Sandra died. Autopsy results are pending.

Sheneman said Huckaby's interviews with the Tracy Press newspaper weren't consistent with what she had told investigators, prompting further questioning by police, though he wouldn't elaborate.

Huckaby told the paper that Sandra visited her home on March 27, the day of her disappearance, to play with her daughter. But Huckaby said she'd turned the child away because her daughter needed to pick up her toys, so Sandra went to another friend's home instead....

Hence my position - trust no one - in church or out of church, as parents we need to watch out kids 24 / 7 and not think they are safe when out of our sight. I feel for the parents of this little girl and will be looking out for the results of this case.

Case Cantu Sandra

No motives yet and I don't think there is a confession either but inconsistencies on her story led to the arrest. This article throws a little more light om who Melissa Huckaby really is...

QUOTE
TRACY, Calif.  -  The woman suspected of killing an 8-year-old girl found stuffed into a suitcase is being held in an observation cell where jail staff monitor her mental health, officials said.

Meanwhile, the families of the suspect and the slain girl attended Easter services Sunday at separate churches, struggling to cope.

Melissa Huckaby, a 28-year-old Sunday school teacher, is in custody at the San Joaquin County Jail, held without bail on suspicion of murder and kidnapping of Sandra Cantu. The girl was a playmate of her 5-year-old daughter, Madison.

Huckaby's father, Brian Lawless, said he did not believe his daughter was capable of what police accuse her of doing.

"I just can't comprehend. There are no words," he told reporters. He said Huckaby lived for her daughter and "was that same way with other children. She loved other children."

Sandra disappeared on March 27, and her body was found April 6 by farmworkers, stuffed in a suitcase in an irrigation pond. Huckaby was arrested early Saturday.

Police declined to give details but said said inconsistencies in Huckaby's story during questioning led to her arrest. They said they have no motive for the slaying.

On Sunday, citizens in this city of 78,000 people about 60 miles east of San Francisco were still coming to grips with Huckaby's arrest and Sandra's death.

Sandra lived with her mother down the street from where Huckaby lived with her grandfather, Clifford Lawless, pastor of Clover Road Baptist Church.

About 400 parishioners, including members of the Cantu family, packed into a high school cafeteria to hear Journey Christian Church Pastor Scott McFarland's Easter sermon.

Journey was one of more than a dozen churches that mobilized members Sunday to pray for the Cantu family. McFarland sent a special message to the family that, like Christ, Sandra's spirit had risen to heaven.

"Jesus is out of the tomb and Sandra is too," McFarland told The Associated Press after the sermon. "She's not in a grave, she's not in a suitcase. She's in heaven and celebrating the best Easter ever."

About 20 parishioners and an equal number of reporters filled the Lawless' church on Sunday. Clifford Lawless and others offered prayers for Sandra's family.

It was not clear if Huckaby had hired an attorney. Lawless family members said jail officials had denied their requests to visit her, and they have not spoken to her since the arrest.

San Joaquin County Sheriff's Deputy Les Garcia said the mental health staff has not cleared Huckaby to have visitors and she is still in an observation cell. Huckaby also turned down media requests for interviews, Garcia said.

Huckaby's uncle, John Hughes Jr., told The Associated Press his niece was from a good family but had hit a rough patch. He said she had moved in with her grandparents in Tracy about a year ago.

"They opened their home up to her to try to get her life back on track. I think a lot of families have problems like that," Hughes said.

Huckaby was scheduled to appear in court on April 17 to check in with a county mental health program as part of a three-year probation sentence for a petty theft charge to which she pleaded no contest....

I hope that investigators learn why she would do something like this. IT is interesting to note that this crime was preformed by a female when it is usually a male who does this sort of thing. I hope this is not a new trend.

She is being observed for mental oddities, but one has to wonder if that isn't just a front. I wonder if they even really have the right person?

I believe they have the right person if her stories do not match and she could not explain what happened. I hope it was her that lead the police to the ditch to recover the body.
