New Birth Certificates

Lately, there seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding the new computerized birth certificates. Therefore, I have decided to start this thread, for the sole purpose of acquiring accurate information, on the procedure involved in applying for a new birth certificate and other relevant matters. I would like to know:

1) The precise location of the New Birth Certificate Registry.
2) When is the best time to go into the registry, to avoid the long queues?
3) What documents are required to apply for a new birth certificate, apart from the bringing in the original one?
4) After applying, how long does it take to receive the new one?
5) If any mistakes were made on the new birth certificate, how long does it take to rectify it?

Please share your experience in detail, concerning any challenges you were faced with while going through the application process.

Sigh! I will answer my own thread!

I discovered that the new Registry is the same building where the Canadian Embassy used to be, that is, next to Courts on South Quay, Independence Square, Port of Spain.

It is quite frustrating, having to apply for your new birth certificate. However, there are three ways for an individual, to apply for their new computerized birth certificate:

1) Visit TTPOST and ask about the procedure to apply for the new birth certificate.

2) Complete the application form and enclose a photocopy of: your identification card (both sides), marriage certificate and your old birth certificate. Attach all these documents to the application form, place in an envelope, seal it and ensure that it is correctly addressed to the Registry office. The application form indicates how to address the envelope. Then, simply submit your envelope in the red post box inside of the Registry office.

3) Visit the Registry office. I have been told that the best time to go, where you will be guaranteed to receive a number is, as early as 4 am and wait until the doors are opened. But there is no way that I am ever going to be caught waiting for a place to open at 4 am! I would recommend to visit the Registry at 7:30 am for the latest and not 4 am; at 4 am, it is very dangerous to be waiting around in such a lonely part of Port of Spain.

There is a number system whereby, an individual must take a number and patiently wait for it to be called. At a certain time, the numbers may finish and this means that you have to come back again the following day at an appropriate time, to receive service.

Once you are attended to, most likely, you will be asked to collect your new birth certificate the following day.

First of all, you should obtain the application form at the Registry or if you know someone who has access to this form online, ask your friend to email it to you and complete it. You need to photocopy your original birth certificate, your identification card (both sides) and for married women, please photocopy your original marriage certificate also. Carry these documents with you that is, the original and photocopy and the form, when going to the Registry office.

Unfortunately, this varies. Some of my friends boast about mailing in their request and receiving the new computerized certificate in two weeks time. If you choose to go into the office and wait to be attended to, most likely, you will be asked to return the following day, to collect your new birth certificate. And of course, there are instances whereby, people have mailed in their request and never received their new birth certificate!

When you are completing the application form, please write in legibly, to avoid any mistakes being made. Hope and pray that they process your request without any problems! I understand that it is painfully long to receive your correct certificate.
