Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has agreed to resign, the president's office said Tuesday.
The Italian parliament reluctantly passed a budget reform measure earlier in the day with virtually all lawmakers present voting for the measure. But a majority of the 630 lawmakers abstained from the vote to show their unhappiness with the government.
If the measure had failed, Berlusconi would likely have been forced to resign and European support for Italy's sovereign debt could have vanished, causing an immediate crisis in the eurozone's third-largest economy.
International concern has focused on Italy in recent weeks as analysts worry that the financial crisis centered on Greece might spread.

Italy's former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was sentenced Friday to four years in prison for tax fraud.
Berlusconi is likely to appeal the sentence handed down by the Milan court.
The case involved his Mediaset group and the purchase of TV rights.
Berlusconi, 76, resigned as prime minister in November over his country's debt crisis, bringing to an apparent end an 18-year era in which he dominated Italian politics.
He had survived a series of political, corruption and sex scandals over the years, involving allegations of embezzlement, tax fraud and bribery. Ref. CNN
Nobody knows if he is out of the game for real, since he is a master in regenerating his public image. But I'm sure the post-Berlusconi era will be highly instructive for many people. I only hope that, when all the truth about his "Peculiar" way of leading the Government will emerge, after his death, my fellow citizens will learn something and put the knowledge to good use instead of only criticize and complain whithout doing anything, which is way too common in Italy.

Politics is something I generally stay away from because of men like Silvio Berlusconi, a former mob boss and now president of a country. The worst part is the people who voted for him to be there, no one should complain.
