Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome - EDS
I was watching a documentary called, "SuperHuman" that features unusual humans with extra ordinary abilities. One such person had Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome - EDS AKA: "Cutis hyperelastica" which enables him to ben and twist his joints beyond the normal. So Anyone familiar with this?
I have not heard of this but I have known many "double jointed" people that could do some interesting things with certain body parts. I know my youngest daughter can almost touch her wrist with her thumbs. It is kind of freakish to see some of that these people can do.
I actually have EDS, though not to the degree of the person on the Super Human show. I can touch my thumb to my wrist, bend my thumb on the backside of my hand, hyper-extend my elbow (Past flat), and bend my pinky at <90 to the back of my hand. I am also able to dislocate my thumb and shoulder at will and then pop them back in joint with no pain. I never realized this was a disease until I was in college. I loved freaking people out at parties or school with my 'weird human trick'. I am also able to pop every joint in my body (Toes, ankles, knees, hips, back, sternum, shoulder, elbow, wrist, fingers, neck, and jaw). When I wake up in the morning I have to pop a lot of them just to get moving.
Does anyone else have EDS type I (Hypermobility)?
I have been to a doctor and been examined, he warned that overextending my joint will lead to deterioration faster, but checked to make sure I don't have any of the other issue (Weak blood vessels, or elastic skin). All checks out, so right now I just enjoy occasionally freaking people out, and being able to relieve joint pain without seeing a chiropractor.
Before I read the part about your doctor's advice I was thinking the same thing; you're killing your joints by doing it even if you can. I don't know how old you are but I know the older you get the more prone you will be to injury and bone joints not as slick as they used to be so do be careful. By the way, is this just your upper body or can you bend your knees in some weird position too?
Strangely enough it is mostly my upper body. I never really paid much attention to my legs when I was younger (They just hung out under my desk, not doing anything interesting), but my hands were readily available for me to play with and 'stretch'. As such I am extremely inflexible in my legs (Can't even touch my toes). My knees are able to hyperflex (Bend backwards), and part of popping my knees is to torque them around at an angle to my ankle (Which as far as I am aware is not normal).
As far as damage goes, my doctor warned me not to keep dislocating any loose joints (Thumb and shoulder), but said that popping my joints isn't bad at all, just releasing nitrogen and such built up in joint.
