Seeing In The Dark

What's the best way to se in the dark without giving your location away? I'm thinking medieval here and not science fiction.

Get a pet wolf or other creature of the night that can see better than we can.

Yeah but they aren't easy to carry around plus how are they going to let me know what they see?

You could make a character that sees only in black and white.
Otherwise, the only alternative I see is the pet, but like you said, I don't see how they will be able to tell you what they see.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned magic. With the element of magic you can solve most any problem in a medieval situation. This isn't limited to the magic-user either since you can buy or find an object to enable you to see in the dark.

If you have the seeing of your familiar then that could work, of course there is also nightvision but you'll need a spell for both those.
