Cutback on jury trials criticised

A Government plan to reduce the number of jury trials in New Zealand would only "marginally" speed up the court system, according to the Law Society. Ref. Source 5

Jury Trials History & Civil Business Politics

The question arises however that will reducing the number of jury trials also reduce the right to a fair trial? In the case of smaller cases of course there is no need for a jury trial, but for crimes such as murder, manslaughter or rape I feel there may be need for trial by jury of peers.

Jury duty can now be put off by up to a year under changes which take effect today. Ref. Source 8
