EchoHawk vows end to Indian mistreatment
As a child in public schools in the 1950s and '60s, Larry EchoHawk heard teachers talk about his fellow American Indians as "savages," "bloodthirsty," "renegades" and "heathens." He said his sister was sent home from school for having the wrong color of skin. Ref. Source 1
I can relate to EchoHawk, I mean I'm not an American Indian but from India and going to school sometimes you would hear the small but hurtful remarks. Sometimes people can be so stupid and put themselves as though they are better then you just because they are not the same race.

Echo Hawk announced his resignation Monday
"There is no doubt that in the last three years a new era for tribal relations with the United States has emerged and Larry Echo Hawk played no small part in it," said Jacqueline Pata, executive director of the National Congress of American Indians. "He listened with great conviction, setting a tone for consultation that we must always ensure is reflected in the federal government's approach to nation-to-nation meetings." Ref. Source 6
