From a purely military standpoint, removing soldiers from the front lines is a positive development for the side that develops the Robots, especially if the objective is to win the battle. There is no difference in sending in a military robot to do the killing (If it is controlled by a human), then firing a missile from a jet or from a boat miles away. The military robot is just another weapon that is used for long distanced warfare.

I believe the fear is that the robot may get 'too smart' and eventually turn on the side they should be protecting. I can see this happening if the robot is programmed for tactical assault and is considered faster than a human controller.

If something like this could happen (Picturing the movie 'Terminator' in my mind) then we are a long way off. There is no way our technology can be bright enough yet to plan a take over. Now, on the other hand, I do think that in the wrong hands... Hackers / terrorists, can make it really bad for us by using our technology against us. We could take a page from the Germans and how they were able to conquer Rome.

Tech leaders warn over 'killer robots':
Autonomous weapons, which use artificial intelligence to select targets without human intervention, have been described as "The third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear arms," Wrote around 1,000 top technology chiefs in an open letter. "If any major military power pushes ahead with AI weapon development, a global arms race is virtually inevitable," Ref. Source 4y

IN ONE scenario a swarm of autonomous bots would hang above a combat zone, scramble the enemy's communications and autonomously fire against them. Ref. Source 3x.
