Brother Jeff, two wrongs don't make one right. Just because you're providing a few examples of other members who gambled one way or another doesn't make the whole topic of playing poker more acceptable, please don't fall victim of the traps that Satan put in our way to make us believe that certain things aren't as bad as we think they're. My dear brothers and sisters our church leaders have spoken on the matter and we have received counsel we can choose to rebel against those teachings and pay the sad consequences of disobedience or we can choose the right and receive the blessings that only through obedience we can obtain. God bless you all my brothers in Christ.

I cant believe some of these responses so because others do it (gambling) it is safe and acceptable...geez folks. The part that playing poker teaches you math or even psychology made me laugh its like saying watching porn teaches you about anatomy.

Playing Poker With LDS Friends? Studies Doctrine Mormon

I can't help but notice the blind hypocrisy in this thread.

I am sure a little conversation about politics with most of the poker objectors in this thread would show some drastic moral contradictions when it comes to LDS doctrine.

Rather off topic, but...
For example, who here voted for McCain, Obama, George W Bush , John Kerry or Al Gore in the last 8 years for president and who here has supported the wars we are in in 2001-2003 and who still supports them after 5000 troops have died and 100s of thousands of innocents.

Now most of you fit the description above, now go read section 98 and try to justify it.

If you don't know why section 98 which is the Lords will is in complete opposition to the positions above then you are in no way credible to comment on the morality of poker.

Rather off topic, but...
I will give you some help with 8 words

Renounce war and proclaim peace

Befriend the constitution

Now, you probably haven't read the constitution or know anything about the war, yet you supported people who seek to destroy the constitution and want to go to war.

Do you notice the blind following and positions?

Kind of like the poker positions in this thread.

Cheers.

You says so much and say so little at the same time. War, constitution and the kitchen sink to give a position on poker and yet I haven't read anything to go one way or the other from your message. Poker, another one of the evils of man set to entice you to gamble. Gambling is an evil, poker is an enhancement of that evil. What, you play poker without money, let's be honest here, its as simple as that.

McKay,

Do you think it would be morally ok to play a video game like Madden or some strategy game for money or a living?

Politics? Mc Cain, Obama, Bush? What the heck are you talking about? So do you think is acceptable or not to play poker? Thats what we're discussing.

Just as acceptable as those who play games such as sports, board games or video games for a living or for fun.

If the above are not acceptable , then poker is not acceptable, if they are , then poker is.

Skippy32, perhaps you did not read the Read Me Thread of this Board, but I suggest you do so now: Source 2 You should have already read our Constructive Posting Policy that you agreed to before joining. Within it and the first reference you will note some things that you are out of line in, for instance:

As a second Post in this Community you are making yourself sound ignorant by touching on the Constitution and politics. Additionally, not everyone that is here should be placed in the same bucket, nor is everyone aligned to the Constitution of the USA. Interestingly enough the last few Users before you aren't even from the USA.

Continuing, what does all those off topic remarks have to do with the subject of the Thread which is about Poker? So far you have done little in the way of stating why an LDS Member should not feel any guilt about playing Poker, indeed all you have done is try to use other unrelated items to justify your argument. If you wish to come here and show us "new ideas" as you stated in your Introduction then at least help us to understand your point of view by answering the "Why" and the "Because" of the subject.

Let me re-post the original question:

international QUOTE (SamstaUK)
What do you think? Is playing poker alright if you aren't actually gambling anything? Or should it be avoided altogether?

Rather off topic, but...
If you have questions about the Usage of the Community then I suggest you ask in your Intro Thread or read the FAQ Board which is very comprehensive and detailed.
