I wonder if those who are adamantly against face cards are also against playing Old Maid and some of the other games I listed. The time wasting can apply to any interest or activity and if one is not gambling, other games are the same as face card games.
That is why I consider the doctrine at best to be a model like the WoW though in this case shot through with much personal opinion. Apostles such as BRM and JFS had a lot of personal opinion published in their non-official works which is why those works were rejected by the Church as unsanctionable. However, many quotes and ideas from those works have made it into official LDS published works which is not necessarily a problem because most of it is good stuff anyway.
Card playing is not intrinsically against any major foundational LDS principles/doctrines like Socialism/Communism and the welfare state, for example, are. So it comes down to time wasting and gambling which are in opposition to moral doctrines. I suppose if one took this card-playing doctrine at face value only and not in the spirit of the law, one should be eliminating all hobbies, interests, and entertainment from one's life. I don't believe the Gospel is that puritanical.
Call it justification if you will, but I'll run with it confidently.

Fair enough. From the November 1972 Ensign:

Comments: If its not for actual money then there is no difference between any card game and monopoly or other games where you actually simulate money. Its just a game people. If someone wants to see more than that they have a problem.
James, are you suggesting we should disregard the counsel of our Lord's servants? Sorry but between choosing to follow our leaders and an internet stranger I rather choose our leaders.
