I was just wondering if it was okay to play poker when your not actually gambling real money.

Well, I provided you with a quote (if you was looking for Church leaders position) otherwise I am sure others have their own views about the topic. Now whoever compared it to pornography is their own view since I never read about such an odd comparison.

Friends LDS Poker Playing

Name: Ryan

Comments: I wish I still had a little sheet that my bishop passed around once that talked about playing cards. Tons of great quotes and I'm going to end up butchering one of them and don't know who to attribute it to but basically a leader in the church around 1940 said that cards in and of themselves have a demonic origin and are designed to mock diety. For example, a Jack represents Jesus, the Queen represents Mary, and the King represents Joseph, the cards Ace to 10 are mocking the ten commandments. That seemed like overkill to me, and made up, so a few years later I asked my mission president about it (I had an investigator with concerns about card playing) and he said that I probably shouldn't even touch a deck of cards, but told me to tell my investigator just not to gamble under the premise of only telling people what they need to know, and what they can handle. I don't know if this will help.

I can sort of see where you are coming from, but that sounds a bit extreme.
What about non-gambling card games? Like Pairs or Go Fish? Are we not supposed to play these games because Playing Cards are evil?

After reading over this I do feel like was mentioned earlier that SamstaUk is just looking for the answer of omething he may have already decided. Here is something to think about, will you encourage children to eat candy that is shapped like drugs, cigarettes and beer bottles even if it's just candy? The question is similar to your question. Is it OK to play with it if its just for fun. Maybe there is another message. What do you think?

Well I agree that I probably shouldn't play with poker chips, but now people are saying that cards altogether are evil, which I don't agree with.

SamstaUK my brother please don't allow the spirit of rebellion to take over your ability to know right from wrong. Your original question was if there is anything wrong with playing poker cards even if you're not gambling and quotes were provided for you but you don't seem satisfied.

I heard once it's not about any type of cards but the ones with faces on it like the poker cards so even if you're playing just for the fun of it it's better to stay away from them I mean if they're just a hobby.

I'm not trying to rebel, and as I said earlier I rarely ever play poker, but the quote provided says you shouldn't play cards at all because you will get addicted to them and never want to stop playing, which I don't agree with.

I never thought of playing with chips is appearing as evil, so I wont use them anymore, thankyou to whoever pointed that out.

The only thing thats bugging me is people are demonizing cards altogether, when there are hundreds of none-gambling games you can play with your family and bring them together, so I don't see playing cards as evil, but gambling(and pretending to gamble) is, or appears to be.

Also people seem to think there are "regular" playing cards and "poker" cards, there is no difference, a deck of cards can be used for any card game.

Hope this clears some stuff up, I never actually made a decision before I posted, I just don't agree with the whole "playing cards are evil" thing.
