Intelligent Matter

Name: Nieija

Comments: I've often pondered on intelligent matter. There is a talk from Cleo Skousen about the Atonement and how matter and intelligence is combined. I think there were several others who talked about this even around the beginning of this dispensation(Orson Pratt?) Now, it is pretty logical that once the intelligence obeys matter will be affected. Therefore, working through the priesthood and the responding keys we should be able to accomplish the same feats that Christ has done.

Why would the intelligent matter choose to obey the "dark side" then? We know that the sea is not safe in the last days and that seems to suggest that it is obeying the adversary. Why would intelligent matter voluntarily choose to obey someone who will lose the battle in the end anyway?

Or is it rather so that it can be forced(the adversary also has power/priesthood?) to obey or has to obey to some degree so that the plan of salvation can be accomplished?

I think there is a reference in Abraham 4:18 that the intelligent matter had been watched until it obeyed. So there was not immediate obedience. Does it obey out of respect? Why would it respect evil motives?

Once again thanks for your thoughts on this.

Matter Intelligent

Nieija,

I am not sure what you mean by "intelligent matter" Skousen uses the terms, "intelligence" and "element". Are you referring to intelligences? or intelligence and element together? So its hard to answer your questions.

Remember, Skousen would say that intelligence has agency, and it obeys God because it honors him. Parley Pratt (keys to science of theology) says that intelligence has the ability to possess passions, charity, and free will. While element does not.

I am not sure what you mean by intelligence obeying the dark side. Intelligence has free agency so it will obey what is chooses, and it must also follow law within the bounds that it is given. For every thing has its law (D&C88).

In short intelligence has free agency and obeys God because it honors him, and it works withing the laws that bound it. That is the Skousen answer. I am not sure I buy it per say but that is what it is.

We can change some words of your question to answer itself...

Why would I voluntarily choose to obey someone who will lose the battle in the end anyway?

Sometimes we don't know why we disobey the Lord. The same happens to intelligence.
