Summit Of The Americas

Summit of the Americas

What are your thoughts about the upcoming Summit of the Americas to be held in Port of Spain 2009? Is Trinidad & Tobago ready to entertain everyone internationally?

Americas The Summit

When I first heard about Trinidad hosting the Summit of Americas, I thought to myself, what a blatant waste of money! We should be concentrating on devising a plan to curb crime in this country or utilising money to build more hospitals, schools, fix our roads but somehow, our Prime Minister believes that holding the Summit of Americas here will stimulate our economic growth. I am strongly against this latest move by the government. We cannot even ensure the safety of our own people, which begs the question, do we have enough manpower to ensure that those who are attending the Summit will be safe?

Is it just me, or is anyone else wondering where the government is finding the funds to finance this venture and also bail out CLICO?

They've had a couple years of record oil prices to sit on, so they think they can 'afford' to splurge. I actually think the Summit of the Americas is a good thing. Are we ready for that? Probably not. I'm just going to wait and see how it plays out. What I will not wait for is personal preparation by making sure I am well stocked with food and what not in case of chaos.

I think this government has their priorities mixed up. Even though a meeting of this magnitude could be positive, there are pressing matters in the country that need serious consideration.

Obama gets the job done...in T&T

I am terribly sorry, hurt, and offended that US President Barack Obama is not passing through my neck of the woods; it's not that I wish to see him, or even wave at him. I was forced to wave enough flags, standing in the burning sun as a kid, when the Queen came here many moons ago. And I have benefitted nothing from the flag-waving, except maybe arthritis in my waving arm. Ref. Source 3

Maybe this summit could do some good in T&T. Maybe the government will realize its short comings in security and lack of police protection and do something to curb the violence and take back control of the islands from the gangs and other hoods who seem to roam around free to do as they wish.
