As a Trinidadian living in the US, it seems that the crime situation in Trinidad and Tobago is now out of control. The solution seems to elude the politicians or they don't care. I suspect that the Rum and Roti politics that have been the norm for a long time has become systemic that nobody knows when things were different. It appears that Laventille is now of one the reservations that are used to compartmentalize low income citizens of the island by sweeping them under the carpet and out of sight. This is a dangerous strategy. One only has to visit South American countries like Brazil and Venezuela to see the effects of this strategy. When an individual sees their life as being of little value then they perceive that other lives must be the same also. I feel that the best strategy would be to close the gap between the rich and poor. If the average citizen enjoyed a reasonable standard of living, then the crime rate would decrease. I would like to hear different opinions on how this problem can be solved.
