Just read your blog. If I may give an unasked suggestion, keep in mind that a contract with a strictly specific default clause so that if he suddenly 'changes his mind' you are not left with high rent, etc. I think promises were made before that were not kept and you don't want to be in that situation again.

If it all works out then welcome to the world of work at home.

Introduction FarSeer

I know, that's something that I've been thinking about for the past couple of days since he brought it up. That was Thursday. He seems serious about it, he's already called the phone company to see how they can transfer calls directly to me from clients, etc. I would have to have a dedicated phone line for that, and he wants to have live video contact with me during business hours. ( Like a "Roz-cam" in my office, and they would have a Jumbo-Tron where my desk is now - the Roz Corner (laugh) (laugh)! )

And the bottom line is, if he changes his mind 6 months from now, we would have to move again because the cost of an extra bedroom is about $300 - $500 in extra rent that we couldn't afford. And is he considering that and the costs of the phone, broadband, security system, etc. As part of my contract or as his own cost of doing business? He's a hard negotiator so I expect to be very, very specific about every single expectation. And it will be in writing with witnesses.

Hi Roz, well the guy doesn't impress me much to be honest. I know, I don't know him but from the time you wanted a raise and he didn't want to give it to you it made me think he didn't really appreciate your work and he was taken full advantage of you as a kind human being and as a single mother as well so I'm kind of surprised that he wants to do all these changes and pay so much money when he didn't want to give you a small raise in the first place. I know this is probably something you don't want to hear, I'm sorry. However I usually try to measure how a person's response will be based on past choices.

I would just HATE to see you in a predicament a few months from now if he changes his mind (and I have the impression that if he does, he won't feel sorry one bit) so please, ensure there is a contract, witnesses and every single detail on that piece of paper!

Thinking of you Roz smile.gif

I do appreciate that, LDS_Forever, because I'm thinking the same things. He didn't want to appreciate me while I have been "under his thumb" but now that I'm leaving he doesn't want to lose me. Frankly, it would be hard to replace me, which he is already finding out. Either the people want 30% to 50% MORE than what I currently earn or they don't have the qualifications or experience. There is no one currently in the office who has the knowledge or experience.

It's been interesting to watch them floundering around trying to figure out what to do. One partner suggested they might have to hire two people, or outsource some of the work. I've been helping as much as I can to provide the information on websites and even printing out resumes from craigslist, but there really haven't been any qualified candidates.

This "solution", at least for now, seems to work for both of us. In 6 months or a year, maybe I'm the one who won't be happy with it. I've been pretty miserable there at times, as you all know. And I've seen some really great opportunities with Sacramento companies that I feel qualified for.

So I guess we'll be talking about it some more. smile.gif

Well I hope it does work out for you and he does sign. I will be interested to see if he can put pen to paper on this one. In any case it sounds like you are so skilled as to be more of an asset to someone else and may actually be 'selling' yourself short to your current boss but at least you go to your new area already working.

FarSeer Introduction

That is part of the attraction, that I can go to the rental office with a job already and that will help to get a place to live. The boss DID sign an "intent to continue employment arrangement" letter that I asked for, specifically for this purpose. So I do think his intentions are there.

My problem is hanging my hopes for my livelihood on a couple of whispered discussions in his office. I found several sample "telecommuter" agreements on the Web that I spliced/cut/pasted together and emailed to him with a request to discuss. In the meantime, I'm going to continue to submit resumes and request interviews. If he pulls the plug, I'll at least have a backup plan.

Also, the fact that the people qualified for my position are asking for so much more salary than I make has really made me realize how much I *should* be making, makes me see my own value. So negotiations will be interesting smile.gif

Knowing your value in the market place helps, I know I have short changed myself many times in the past due to lack of confidence and value of my skills in the open market. I will never make that mistake again. (Thanks to my Wife.)

Far as rental agreements hire a good real estate lawyer is can pay off in spades if they landlord decides to back off or change rules of engagement.

Oh! and good to see your face again!

It's been an eventful week. My mother and my daughter and I went up to Sacrament for my niece's wedding and had a great time. We also visited several possible rental homes and applied for one that we have since been approved for. It has an extra room for an office, but we also made sure it would be something we could afford if the telecommuting thing doesn't work out.

I also had an interview with a company there that I absolutely would LOVE to work for! Love their website, love their blogging on different sites, and loved the women I met there. I love the path their company has taken in mentoring small businesses. The only problem: the position is only part time, and the pay somewhat less than I now earn. They do expect to grow and have more work within a year, but that doesn't work for my situation. I was very sad to have to decline that opportunity.

When I got back to the office, the boss was not happy that I had an interview, and we suddenly are having meetings with the partners and discussing solid details. Still no written agreement, but we do have witnesses and one of the other partners is very much in MY corner. She wants to see how it works out so she can work at home herself smile.gif And the offer now is not to be on contract but to remain an employee with full benefits. Equipment has already been set aside for me. I will be given funds to set up the office, the broadband and security contracts, and whatever else is needed to facilitate the move. ("No Spanish leather chairs, of course." says the boss (laugh).) They also discussed flying me down for "crunch" time deadlines, like the end of the year and some corporate tax deadlines. It's all very interesting.

So it looks like a go. We are on track to move the weekend of Aug 12, which is the Friday before school starts there. We had planned to move this coming week, but the house won't be ready. My daughter won't have any time at all to meet anyone before she walks on campus, other than at church that Sunday, of course. She says it's okay. I hope so.

Julie says she has such a different perspective now that she will be really careful whom she chooses for her friends. She has been so lonely this summer with none of her so-called "friends" having any contact with her at all. Well, two have, but there was a big birthday party that "everyone" was invited to but her, and it was a "friend" who should have included her. We had a lot of tears over that one. One girl called to ask why she wasn't there, a vicious act by a girl who knew she wasn't invited. Julie says she'll be really glad to leave them all behind and start fresh.

So now... On to the packing! I'm throwing away so much stuff, I think we'll be traveling pretty light, even though we are combining two households. My son should be helping us and driving one of the cars up, then driving the truck back to save a little money on the fees.

I guess I could have posted this to my blog... Didn't expect to write so much!
