34 million on food stamps

A recent report showed that 34 million Americans were receiving food stamps, a number that was much higher than usual. Oh, the poor poor. How bad is it to be poor in America? Why are people forced on food stamps? Is it because of truly hard times or because they have 'too many other bills.' Really? Other bills come before food? I wonder how food stamps work, do they have a list of items people can get? Can it be abused? As an example, can someone get lots of meats or the most expensive stuff only?

Since I am unemployed, and we have the two little girls living with us, we get "food stamps". However, these days they come in the form of a debit card.

However, they can only be used for food items. You cannot take money out of the card at an ATM, bank, or at the cashier.

There is not a "list" of foods that they can purchase. We just cannot purchase anything that is NOT food. We cannot purchased "prepared" foods such as roasted chicken or jalapeno poppers, although we can purchase frozen poppers.

We can, and do, purchase some food storage items such as bulk flour, beans, or even wheat. We try to focus on good staples including a lot of fruits and vegetables, cheese, and good bread.

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks Nighthawk. I suppose there is an "X" amount of money that can be spent depending on the size of the family? Also, how long is the card good for? Does a person has to be reviewed/qualified monthly?

Rather off topic, but...
No updates on the interviews you attended?

I support those who are out of work and need this program to get by. I do not support the people who refuse to work just to stay on the governments welfare payments. I have seen too much abuse of the system to support it totally.

Yes, there is a set amount of $ available on the card. The state "recharges" the card each month with that amount.

The amount is determined based upon family assets, income, and size. At the moment (for a couple of months), we have one additional person at home, the girls' mother. When she and the girls leave, we will notify the state of that fact, and we will get much less.

We are just very grateful that the program is available. However, we really look forward to the day when we won't need it.
