More Americans using food stamps than ever before: 45.8 million:
The record on food stamps has been going on for well over two years now. In March 2009, that record was 31 million people. Now, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a whopping 45.8 million people are getting them Ref. Source 9
One in four American children live in households without enough food to go around, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
At 17 million, there are more children battling hunger today since officials started keeping track in 1995. While food insecurity - the federal government's catch phrase for not having enough food to support a healthy lifestyle - has increased by 40 percent across the board since the recession began, economic hard times have hit kids the hardest. Families with children struggle with food insecurity at almost double the rate of childless households. The number relying on food pantries has increased by 66 percent since 2007. Ref. Source 3

One reason for this, is that people don't consider eating healthy is a major part of health insurance. Most people expect to eat what they want, cook it fast in the microwave, and be healthy, if they become sick, they think that all they have to do is go to a doctor and their years of eating bad will be fixed.
Along with haleray's thoughts, when we were on the food stamp program, some of the cashiers actually questioned us a little as to why we were buying/stocking up on the basics---flour, baking soda, salt, oil, milk, water, canned fruits/veggies, pasta, rice, grains, etc...(the basics). We did not buy much fruit and veggies as we have our own rather large garden to supply those. Apparently, a lot of people on food stamps according to the cashiers, were buying frozen prepared meals, ice cream, soda, and snack/junk foods, not healthy food. Many of the cashiers would ask if we were buying the basics because we had a restaurant or school that we were cooking for. We would tell them that we try to make healthy homemade meals for our family, which includes 6 young boys. Many of the cashiers were surprised that people still make homemade meals instead of already prepared frozen dishes.
Obamanomics: food stamps = job creation?
If you didn't think it could get any dumber than Nancy Pelosi's suggestion that unemployment checks were a great job creator -- you were wrong. Now the Obama administration is doubling down and saying that food stamps, yes food stamps, is the most 'direct' stimulus possible and creates jobs. Well then, unemployment checks and food stamps for everybody! Economy fixed! Ref. Source 1
I don't see how food stamps create jobs. Some people see food stamps as free money. My brother said that where he worked there was a person that was going to be promoted, with higher pay. The man thought about it, declined, and said the higher salary would make him ineligible for food stamps.
Haleray, what kind of job the guy was offered? Maybe his salary was really small and he was probably better off getting assistance with food, sometimes you don't know the full story.
