Welfare Recipients Forced to Sell Food Stamps to Buy Basic Necessities
A new investigation from ColorLines Magazine supported by the Nation Institute's Investigative Fund shows that some poor families are forced to sell their food stamps on the black market for cash in order to survive this prolonged recession. We speak to journalist Seth Wessler, whose investigation focuses on the impact of both the recession and welfare reform in Hartford, Connecticut, a state which has the shortest welfare time limit in the United States. Food-stamp tally nears 40 million, sets record:
The Agriculture Department said 39.68 million people, or 1 in 8 Americans, were enrolled for food stamps during February, an increase of 260,000 from January. USDA updated its figures on Wednesday. Ref. Source 4
It is sad that so many have this crutch. Then when you take into consideration how much food is thrown into the garbage in America for no reason other that they don't want to give it away for free, it gets even sadder. Every single time I swipe my food stamp card I cringe a little.
Food stamp fraud fight heats up in Michigan:
Critics fear some of the reforms, like drug testing food stamp recipients and putting their photo IDs on the state-issued Bridge Cards used to receive those benefits, would run counter to federal regulations, stigmatize welfare recipients and cost the state more than what would be recovered. Senate Cuts Food Stamp Funds; Leaves Oil and Gas Subsidies Intact:
About half of food stamp users are children and the elderly; about one-quarter are working-age women and 14 percent are working-age men. Most have jobs, but about 90 percent fall below the poverty line. Ref. Source 3

The number of people receiving food stamps stands at a record 41 million, or one out of every eight Americans. Driven by the downturn, that number has risen every month for the past 18 months. Last year alone, it grew by 20 percent. It's grown by 50 percent since the recession began. Ref. Source 2
