You are correct they are not cowards at all. They want to inflict harm and terror on people as a way to force them to convert all to Islam and to let them be in control of it all and not the current leaders. For this to happen they have to be willing to kill a lot more people before they themselves are killed. This is a war of unconventional means.
I think there are some people out there right now that have the power and the experience to go in and do what needs to be done to stop this from happening. The only thing that is keeping this from happening is the world is not ready to see that type of death and destruction that these people will do to those causing the terror.
I believe in causing fear in the terrorists to make them think of what they will receive in retribution is a good way to stop terrorist in their tracks.
KN,
In truth, the only way to win a war is to break your enemy's will to resist. To do that you have to fight a war to win it. That mean collateral damage. That means being ugly, mean, and nasty. That means doing things that people in polite company don't discuss. That is how we won the Civil War. That is how we won WW II. That is why the South never rose again and Germany and japan have been good citizens… they were all too afraid not to. War is ugly, it's supposed to be ugly, it should be so ugly that we only wage it as a last resort. We've been making it clean and antiseptic so now we have that has lasted a decade and a half. It's actually more humane to be inhumane, win the stinking thing, and then end it quickly then to let it drag on and on. Then, maybe all of us will remember how ugly war is and we won't have another one for a while and people like me just do our job preventing wars rather than fighting in them.
