Poor Better Off Than Rich

According to survey, the rich people in Trinidad tend to have more disabilities than the poor people although the rich are able to afford the diagnosis when the poor is unable to do so. spock.gif

QUOTE
A higher percentage of the "richer" income group of the population are reported to have various types of disabilities compared with the poor. However, the rich can afford the care to diagnose their conditions.

This recent data was produced by the Central Statistical Office (CSO) yesterday from the Disability from the Survey of Living Conditions 2005.

Minister of Social Development Dr Amery Browne said the data suggests that four percent of the sample population reported a disability.

"Yet, we acknowledge that this must be taken with a grain of salt -and there is more work to be done towards the accurate picture of the segment of our population which has a disability."

Browne was speaking at the Policy Progress Workshop on Research and Legislation by the Disability Affairs Unit held at the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, Mt Hope.

Browne said the workshop reaffirms the ministry's commitment to one of the underlying principles of the National Policy on Persons with Disabilities, which places equal value on the needs of each citizen. It also assesses the role of research as well as the status of legislation which treat with disabled persons.

He said, "The policy is geared towards creating an enabling environment for all persons with disabilities, we understand that no two disabilities are ever alike."

This is why the policy recommends the creation of an extensive and wide-ranging database of persons with disabilities, so that all relevant data can be brought together for easy access and use by the relevant agencies.

The CSO reported that 48.2 percent of the rich had disabilities related to mobility compared to the poor which was 29.8 percent. Sight disabilities were 21.3 percent among the rich and 12.5 percent among the poor. However, the poor had a higher percentage with learning disabilities, 15.5 percent, compared to the rich at 3.3 percent. The poor also had a higher percentage with speaking disabilities, 13 percent, compared to 9.7 percent for the rich.

The CSO also reported that 46 percent of disabled persons received care at home. Among the poorest households, 48 percent had members providing care to persons with disabilities. Among the rich, 37.8 percent received care at home. However, the richer income group had the largest percentage of persons who received institutional care...

Rich Off Poor

The rich probably get more ill because they eat more and exercise less since they have less to do and don't have to work so hard for their money. I still don't think that makes the poor better off though.

Poor Better Off Than Rich Caribbean / Tobago & Trinidad

The poor may have less disabilities according to this report but that does not make their lives any better than the rich. If the rich has a disability, they have so many options to explore. They can get a proper diagnosis here or they could go abroad and have competent doctors who could treat them successfully. Poor people will always suffer since the health care system in Trinidad has literally gone to the dogs. I am sure this report does not indicate how many poor people die under the health care system.
