Gambling Problems - Page 2

I don't suffer with a urge to gamble, but I like to visit the river boat casinos in St. Louis when I visit home. I typically go into the casino with $50 dollars to spend on what I call "entertainment" and if it is gone, then so am I. My wife and I enjoy Black Jack as you actually have a chance to win as a player. We have won more than we have lost which is much better than I can say for most forms of gambling.

Rather off topic, but...
Now when the office gets a group of people together to purchase a lot of lottery tickets with intention on splitting the winnings, I chip in there too. Hey, I have to be looking out for retirement options!

Vincenzo, you are probably the .05% of those who do gamble that can exert that kind of control especially if as you say you tend to win more than you lose. The fact is gambling can be as addictive as drugs, and once you get into the fix of it you just cannot stop cold turkey without getting the jitters - and I am not kidding - I have see them.

Gambling Problems Health & Special Psychology

It is probably because I am a statistician at heart. I like to play games where the odds are closer to 50/50 because you can enjoy playing longer. I have lost more money at a $.05 Poker machine than I have at a $20 Black Jack table and after I looked and studied the odds, I never played $.05 Poker machines again. I remember once taking my $50 dollars to play and started on $.05 Poker Machines. I lost $30 dollars in about 20 minutes! I took my remaining $20 and went to play Black Jack. I played for about 3hrs at the $5 table and went home that night with $10 left. Didn't win any money, but had nearly 4hrs of entertainment, drinks and food for $40.

You have no idea how hard it was not to type in something like:

I bet this topic reaches 25 post before March!

I had a boss in Japan who loved Vegas. During one of his extended trips to the US, he went to Vegas before he went home and lost ALL of his per diem money. Now I am sure that money was counted on by his wife for some gift as they were apart for about 3 months. After he got back and through being in trouble, he somehow talked his wife into going to Vegas for a holiday. He lost another sizable chunk of cash during that trip and his wife was somewhat less than happy at his spending time at the tables and not on other things since she was not a gambler. When he got back, he told me he can never go back there again because he can't stop gambling when he is there. He actually liked all the lights and the atmosphere... He said it was like drinking. I think he is out of trouble now at home, but it just showed me how easy it is to get hooked.

Back in my drinking days, I liked to play the $.25 video poker machines. I never won much, but I could play for hours on twenty bucks. It wasn't a compulsion to gamble, but something to do with my hands whilst I was drinking and socializing.

I once won $98 on a lottery ticket, but I've never been very lucky with any kind of gambling. Maybe that's why I never developed any kind of emotional attachment to it.
