Hertz - what do they mean for TVs?

A friend recently noticed two Sony LCD televisions placed together in a store, one a 100-hertz model, the other 200 hertz, and both tuned to a breakfast chat show. Ref. Source 7

Yeah I can understand where the sales manager is coming from but if you want to show the difference in the tvs by Hertz you should have a picture that is panning. With the higher Hertz you can see more detail during the camera movement.

Yes the frequency referred to is the rate at which the whole screen is refreshed with a new image. Typically over 100 is considered enough to get a good picture with no blurring in a fast action movie or with a highly intense game. I think 120 is the cheaper option giving excellent performance if you are using the screen for gaming.

That is to say 120 refreshed screens per minute.
