Farseer, that reminded me of another...

Do not use your fork (that you just put in your mouth) to take out condiments or food from the table where everyone else has to share.

Some of these are common sense really.

One less known...

Do not start to eat until the host gestures to start, even if you are seated at the table by him/her.

Table the Sitting

Another one that is very old-fashioned, but a lot of (U.S.) men are wearing baseball caps now so ... Unless you are dining outside, remove your hat before you sit at the table!

This one is funny, wehn I first went to the USA years ago, a guy told his kids to remove their hats on dinner time, they didn't want to, but they did because the father told them to but as soon as they finish eating (yes 5 minutes later) they all left the table to play in the computer with their father permission smile.gif-->rolleyes.gif The kids were teenagers by the way.

LDS I don't understand why you slide the salt instead of just picking up the salt and pepper shakers and handing them to whomever asked for them?

Don't add seasoning to your food until you have tasted it first. I hate that, when my guests start dumping on the salt, pepper, or hot sauce before they even taste the food.

Table the Sitting

I love watching people trying to behave properly at the table.

It's more polite to have dishes of food on the table so that your guests may serve themselves plus they can take as much or as little as they want.
There's nothing worse than being given to much food & feeling as though you have to eat everything on your plate because you don't want to offend anyone.

Did you know that when a woman leaves the table for any reason, it's polite for all the men to stand up (I could have so much fun with this!).

You're not supposed to have a set of bowls of food on the table in the first place, that's why it would be easier to slide the salt instead of picking it up.

They must do things differently where you are because just about every place I go for dinner, their are bowls of food on the table to be passed to help yourself.

Because in 'Etiquette' that is consider 'rude' you should not suppose to be picking and passing food all over the table. Don't ask me why, I have no problem with picking the salt and giving it to somebody *giggles*

laugh.gif no, they don't do things differently here wink.gif I just put in this thread what 'Etiquette' says. A real fancy dinner cannot have bowls of food all over the table! You're supposed to have another little table (with little wheels if possible) where somebody goes around and serve it to the guests so there is not bowls of food on the table itself.

Well, it is true that whenever a movie shows a wealthy family eating that the food is not in bowls on the table, but served by someone else, so I guess in our ultimate goal this is what we should strive for! biggrin.gif Of course, in my house, you are lucky if I don't just leave the food in the pans on the stove and tell you to help yourself laugh.gif !
