I don't believe the police should be doing that sort of work either. If in the process of being detained or arrested you find out that the person is illegal then immigration officials can be called but the police have a more important matter of enforcing local laws, solving murders, etc.

I think you are spot on. This isn't about police not going out and finding illegal immigrants. This is about actively helping them hide.
