Poetry What

Despite what many will say, poetry is not just written word on paper, though it is that too. Poetry can be anything that is beautiful or moving or even simply insightful. Poetry is the expression of ones soul. Thus a painting can be poetry on canvas. A dance can be poetry in motion. A song can be symphonic and poetic. Poetry can also be how an event plays out. If something just seems to go perfect and flow the way it should, it can be poetic. Such things are reflected in poetic justice. When it feels like Karma has delivered the justice one deserves in a fashion fitting the crime. Poetry is all things, and nothing. No one thing that is poetic can always be considered poetry, and yet almost anything can be poetry. Its the true expression of life that defines poetry.

QUOTE (According to Wikipedia:)

Poetry (Greek ποίησις poesis, literally "creating") is a form of art in which language is used for its aesthetic qualities, in addition to, or instead of, its ostensible meaning. Poetry has a long history. Early attempts to define it, such as Aristotle's Poetics, focused on the uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song and comedy. Later attempts focused on features such as repetition and rhyme and emphasised the aesthetics which distinguish poetry from prose. From the mid-20th century poetry has sometimes been more loosely defined as a fundamental creative act using language.

Poetry often uses particular forms and conventions to expand the literal meaning of the words, or to invoke emotional or sensual responses. Devices such as assonance, alliteration and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve musical or incantatory effects. Poetry's use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations.

Some forms of poetry are specific to particular cultures and genres, responding to the characteristics of the language in which the poet writes. While those accustomed to identifying poetry with Shakespeare, Dante and Goethe may think of poetry as writing with rhyming lines and regular meter, there are other traditions, such as those of Du Fu and Beowulf, which use other methods to achieve rhythm and euphony. In today's globalized world, poets often borrow styles, techniques and forms from different cultures and languages.

-------------

I would simplify that: I'm a romantic. To me, written poetry is defined by the rhythm, or melodic flow of the words.

It would be lovely if all poetry were as beautiful as Konquerez' description, but much of the modern poetry just isn't, therefore it needs defining outside of the classification of "it's beautiful".

Poetry What

Poetry is the expression of one's innermost thoughts, feelings, dreams, etc. Often, it is the poet's way of expressing hisself/herself in a way not many people can understand or appreciate. A poet not only has the ability to express his/her own thoughts, feelings, etc. but also has the ability to draw one in. Good poetry is what is written by the heart and soul and sometimes helps others too.

I think that explanations like these are a little too vague, as I could express my dreams, feelings, thoughts etc. without it being even remotely within the category of poetry.

Stephen King's novels are his way of expressing his life's struggles... for example, alien invaders are used to represent his battle with cancer; it's spread throughout his body and his eventual survival of that battle, in one novel. Does that make his novels poetry?

What Is Poetry?

I wasn't implying that poetry had to be those things...I was simply saying that that is what poetry is to me. Also, I never meant to imply that poetry was the only way to express those things. It is simply how I feel about poetry. Any time I read a poem, I see a feeling(s), thought(s), dream(s), or even a story behind it. Others I know interpret poetry differently, just as anything else. That is what is so great about each one of us being our own unique person.
