Why was that scene put in 'Harry Potter'?

So now that I've seen the movie for myself, here's my question. Was the n-dity really artistically necessary (however fleeting or veiled its portrayal)? Is it possible that Ron Weasley's great fear of Hermione hooking up with Harry could have had the same impact if he (and we) saw them in an embrace with their clothes ON? Ref. Source 3
