Ill be the odd one out here. Everyone is speaking males and overlooking a very talented female! Mia Hamm is the Michael Jordan of football. She won four championships while at University of North Carolina and lead the U.S. womens soccer team to gold in 1996. She has so many more
accomplishments. She broke the all-time international scoring record, for men and women, on May 16, 1999, against Brazil in Orlando, Fla., with her 108th career goal "¦ Is the world's all-time leading scorer with 144 goals and 123 assists for 411 points through the end of 2003

Mia Hamm was a cut above players from her generation but I believe there are a few girls who are perhaps more talented than her now. Of course when Mia was playing, women's football was developing so competition was not as fierce as it is today. The US women's team were unstoppable for many years.
But I would like to make two points here. You can't have a Michael Jordan in football, because it really is a team sport. Players don't have the scope to be that dominant because they have to fall into a team strategy with eleven players. Players like Maradona, Best, Cruyff, Platini and Pele were all influential in their own right. But you simply can not have the level of doinance MJ exhibited in football.
Offtopic but, You also can't compare the all-time goal scoring record between women and men. Women's football is much weaker and less competitive. I'm also curious why Americans measure assists in football? Often an assist can be a lucky touch or even a corner, it's not like basketball where it is a clear pass. And an assist might not be as crucial to the goal as other parts of the lead-up play. |

Football is a team sport. Sure, Maradona and Pele would grab you the odd goal all by his own once in a while, but the emphasis of football as always been that of team play. Yes, and yes, Best did play according to a team strategy...even if it meant that everyone passed to him and then acted as a human meat shield.
"Best" players are always going to be measured by the quality of the teams, I think. Undoubtedly the most skilled player to date was George Best - according to Pele, who many tout as the "best."
The difference therein - Best played for Northern Ireland, Pele for Brazil. Brazil won the world cup, Northern Ireland will probably never win the world cup.
Ok, Pele or Maradonna, but who is the best player now!
I think some of the best players in the world play in the English Premiership.
With the exception of the brilliant Kaka of Brazil. No-one bends it like Beckham, even though even he is now passed his best.
The best goalkeeper :- Brad Friedel
The best rightback :- Eboue of Arsenal
Central defence :- Rio Ferdinand
A talented leftback :- Patrice Evera
The best winger :- Christiano Ronaldo, Giggs is passed his best.
Centre of the field :- Steven Gerrard
The best striker :- Adebyor of Arsenal
AC milan's Gatusso is the hard man of soccer in my view, but all of these are just a reflection of my limited experience. Can you guess what team I support?
