Recession's unemployment takes bigger toll on singles
Singles have been hit harder in this recession than married folks, losing jobs at more than a 50% higher rate. While the disparity is typical of economic downturns, it has become more pronounced over the years as employers put a growing premium on higher skills and education, according to a study out Friday from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. My interest would be whether this has to do with:
* Employees not likely giving as much output as a person who has a family to maintain
* Employers feeling sorry for those who have families to maintain so it is easier to let go the single person
* Single people tend to be more fussy about what job they will do.
