Is Tracing Cheating?

Comments: I have to do an art project using a photograph. If I blow up the photograph on my screen and then trace the outline of it will that be cheating?
It's cheating if the rules say not to. If the rules say nothing, then nothing is ruled out. Besides, isn't art about breaking the rules? Using perspective is a cheat, since you're creating the illusion of depth. Illusions are lies, and lying is cheating. But try painting realistically without perspective. I don't think it can be done.
Why do I have the feeling KenGreen is cheating here? If you traced then you should say so and if you did you are not being as creative because you are using the creativity of someone else.
Vince clearly states that the art assignment is to "Do an art project using a photograph", so he is obligated to, as you say, "Use the creativity of someone else". What Vine didn't bother to tell is whether not the assignment's parameters specifically ruled out tracing.
Of course, since the original post was posted in 2011, it's safe to assume that Vince already got away with his cheating, or was found out and punished in some appropriate fashion. We'll probably never know. It'll always be one of the many mysteries of art.
I think tracing is good only if you are a beginner and you need a guidance to show you how to draw properly, but if it's for the intention to copy the whole thing and show it off to others like if it's yours then it is cheating in my opinion.
